LUV was nominated for a Tony in 1964, and the most recent production was a lesbian version in Berkeley: it can only go up.

I remember reading my favorite story when I was a wee babe, at the age of two. More significantly though, I remember my first oratorical performance of the tale, at around the same time.
On a cold, black Passover eve in San Francisco, both sides of my family confronted each other. On the one side of the long dining room table sat the Romanians, on the other side, the Germans.
As the first born, and the cutest, I was requested to read. I contemplated the most suitable material for the solemn celebration, when I anxiously realized I had only ever read one book. But in the following moments it became clear that this book’s vivid story would resonate with this quasi-religious boring exploration of exodus and redemption. Cautiously descending from my booster chair, I reached under the table, pulled the dog’s hair until he ran away, then grabbed…the book.
My fingers caressed the glossy hard cover. The seductive jacket design of rock, flesh and post-war color attracted the drool from my mouth. Carrying the slim tome to the serious world above, I heaved myself into the booster-pulpit. An old man, whom I later realized was my German grandfather, placed in front of me a large black machine, called the “Teipe Recohduh.” His accent obscured the meaning, but I knew this moment would be captured for a lifetime, if not lifetimes.
The families, for once together in purpose, listened. I opened to the first glorious page. The letters flew into my brain, codifying the colored scenes above them. My mouth moved to release this holy energy and out came the virgin wisdom. “Pebbles and Bam-Bam came home from school, and no one was home! Pebbles went into the bathroom, and put on her mother’s lipstick, and Bam-Bam put on his father’s shaving cream. He was about to shave when his father, Fred came home and said, ‘What are you doing? Put that away, and leave the bathroom! When you are old enough, you will be able to shave!’
Exodus and redemption. Wisdom and simplicity. Generations meeting, confronting and resolving their differences. Bam! I was the angel of the night.
